Deep tissue massage is a remedial massage technique, focusing on the deeper layers of muscle tissue. Long slow strokes are used on the affected area, either following or going across the muscle fibres, tendons and fascia.
Deep tissue massage is often recommended for people who:
- have chronic pain
- are involved in sports or heavy physical work
- or have an injury
In the course of a deep tissue massage, tiny contraction knots (called trigger points) may be discovered. These are painful in themselves and can cause pain in another part of the body; trigger point therapy can be used to treat these.
During massage you are unclothed beneath a towel with only the area of the body being worked on being uncovered.
