1) What should I expect on my first visit?
On your first visit you will be asked to fill in a consultation form, followed by a discussion of your needs with me. I will do some postural checks and begin the treatment modality, based on my recommendation and your agreement.
2) Do I need to be completely undressed?
You do not need to be completely undressed as it is customary to wear underwear. In addition you will be draped with towels. If you don’t want to get undressed at all then there are therapies where you can remain fully clothed, like Indian Head Massage, Reflexology or Kinetic Chain Release.
3) How long will a massage treatment last?
A massage treatment can last from 25 minutes to 50 minutes depending on your needs and your choice of duration.
4) Will the massage hurt?
Some deep massage work can be a bit painful but it always has to be within your tolerance level. For example, if 10 is the utmost pain you can endure, it is important to indicate your pain threshold when you get to 6 or 7, so that I can reduce the pressure. It is also important to communicate with me clearly to indicate how it feels - it should be “ a good sore”. There are many treatments that don’t hurt at all like a relaxing massage, Indian Head massage or Reflexology.
5) How often should I get a massage?
If you have an acute problem it is best to have 1 or 2 treatments a week over 4 to 5 weeks to speed up the recovery until you feel better. Otherwise, depending on your needs and your financial position, you could have a massage once a week, every 2 or 3 weeks or even once a month. Regular massages will keep you supple, relaxed and injury free.
6) How will I feel after a massage treatment?
After a deep tissue treatment you will feel very relaxed and sometimes a little sore. The soreness can come on a few days later as it is part of the therapeutic reaction. But a few days after that you should feel a lot better. If you have a relaxing kind of massage you will not be sore but just very relaxed, a bit tired with a feeling of having been very nurtured.
7) When should I not get a massage?
Massage treatments are non invasive, relaxing and natural treatments and are therefore considered safe for most people.
Below are listed some contraindications:
- Contagious diseases including any cold or flu
- Under the influence of drugs or alcohol
- Recent operations
- Skin diseases
- Undiagnosed lumps or bumps
- Cardiovascular conditions like Thrombosis, phlebitis, heart condition
- Gynecological infections
8) How do I know which massage therapy is good for me?
You must not worry about choosing a massage treatment. During the consultation and after having discussed your needs and objectives, I will advise you on what would be the best type of treatment for you.
9) When is the best time to have a Sports Massage?
There are various times when it is beneficial to have a Sport Massage, e.g. 48 hours before a competition a Sports Massage will boost your performance and help to improve your PB. After your event it will help you recover faster and during training it will help you to stay injury free and more supple.
10) What should I do after a massage?
You should drink plenty of water to re-hydrate your muscles and rest, as the massage will continue working 24 hours after the treatment. It is not advised to train hard after a Sports Massage as you would feel quite tired and hard training would not allow the massage to keep working.
11) What are the massage prices?
For most 50 minutes treatments the price is of £45.00
For most 25 minutes treatments the price is of £30.00
For Myofascial Release, Trigger Point Therapy or Orthopaedic Acupuncture the cost for 50 minutes is £50.00 and 25 minutes is £35.00
12) Do you do home visits?
Only in the Morningside area where there is a parking facility, and only for elderly people or for people with a disability who cannot climb my stairs.
There is an added cost of £5.00 for a 50 minutes treatment.
13) What is Massage Therapy?
Massage therapy is the manipulation of soft tissues of the body including muscles, connective tissue (fascia), tendons, ligaments and joints. Massage therapy helps alleviate soft tissue discomforts associated with every day and occupational stresses, muscular over-use and many chronic conditions. If practiced soon enough after accidents involving trauma and injury, massage can greatly reduce the development of painful muscular patterning.
14) Can anyone receive Massage Therapy?
Yes massage is appropriate for individual of all ages including babies, children, pregnant women and the elderly. However there are conditions that are contraindicated (see question 7 contraindication section )
15) Are you a registered Massage Therapist?
I am a member of the Scottish Massage Therapist Organization which is an association which represents 600 therapists. It was founded in 1992 and exists to provide a service to the public, to the massage therapist and to the massage profession. The SMTO works with the General Council for Massage and soft tissue Therapies GCMT in developing and maintaining standards and has been approved by Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council CNHC as a very viable organization. I am also a member of the CNHC and fully insured by Balens.
16) Do you take credit cards?
