What is deep tissue massage?

Deep tissue massage is designed to relieve pain and muscle tension it is very beneficial because it reaches deep layers of muscles, fascia, (connective tissue) and tendons. The goal of this type of massage is to breakdown adhesions (tense areas in muscles), and chronic patterns of tension. It is imperative to break them down because they cause pain, inflammation, and limit movement of muscles and joints.

Benefits of deep tissue massage:

  • alleviates pain
  • helps recovery from injury
  • increases mobility
  • decreases muscle tension
  • helps recovery from a repetitive stress
  • improves posture
  • gives relief from osteoarthritis
  • gives relief from fibromyalgia

How sore will this be?

Deep tissue massage is therapeutic as well as corrective and done properly should not cause excessive pain to the client nor straining to the therapist.  It is done within the clients tolerance level, so if 10 was their utmost pain you would ask them to tell you when you were at level six or seven.

The other way the therapist can know the client is too sore is by feeling them tensing up against the treatment.

Deep tissue massage can cause a bit of pain for a couple of days after which would be natural and then relief will come after that.

It is important to rest and relax as much as possible after a deep tissue massage. It is good to take a hot bath after the treatment and drink lots of water or herbal tea to help the body eliminate waste products.

Treatment for injuries

Attention people with injuries!

I recently attended an intensive 3 day workshop with the renowned American bodyworker and Chiropractic physician Joe Muscolino (I am 2nd from right in front row) and he makes a strong recommendation that anyone suffering a sports or other injury who wishes to recover in the shortest time is well advised to have 2 treatments a week for 3weeks.  This will optimise your chances of a speedy recovery and prevent disappointment.  Check our Muscolino's website to see the latest techniques I can offer: http://www.learnmuscles.com  Please get in touch with me should you wish to book a series of treatments so that I can retain the times in my diary!
