Dr Helga Rhein of Sighthill Health Centre promotes the importance of Vitamin D. Here is a summary of her wise advice:

"Vitamin D is produced in a persons skin when it is exposed to the sun or can be taken from a few foods or supplements. It is then a building substance for a very important powerful hormone called Calcitriol. Vitamin D can be stored in the body for some months and these stores should not run low.


It has been known for more than 100 years that this vitamin is important for healthy bones and muscles and that Rickets was virtually abolished when cod liver oil was given to children. In the last 15 years we have learned that higher blood concentrations of vitamin D are very important not just for bones but also to fight infections, colds and flu,to heal wounds and also to reduce risks of some cancers, diabetes and heart disease. It is also very important in pregnancy to avoid complications and for the baby. As there is never enough sun light in Scotland and we are often indoors, it is very important to take it as a supplement. When sitting in the sun you should bare your arms and legs and take it for ½ hr, without sunscreen. It is advised most healthy adults and teenagers to take 1000-2000 IU each day (25-50 micrograms) For people living in Scotland it is advised 2000-4000 IU or for people with dark skin or who are overweight. A lot of people have found the following benefits:
Fewer colds and flu
Less aches and pains
Muscle strength
Less tiredness
Less feeling of depression or low spirits"...
