Petition for the recognition of Massage Therapists by GPs and Health Insurers

Gill Tree has started a petition and writes,

“As therapists we know the value of the work we do and so do our clients. We deliver many thousands of treatments on a daily basis and work side by side with Physiotherapists, Osteopaths, and Chiropractors and other health professionals. Soft tissue therapists are employed by professional sports teams and athletes and are used by amateur athletes through out the country. The value of what we do was recognised by our inclusion in the medical services team at the 2012 Games and the demand for our services at major events throughout the country. As a profession we have raised the bar on education standards, we are developing a credible body of research and we are regulated both through our professional associations and the voluntary regulator CNHC. We cannot get the Private Health Insurers to take us seriously, most of whom are in denial about the fact that they all ready cover soft tissue work as long as it is delivered by physiotherapists. We cannot get referrals from GPs despite the fact that NICE guide lines on low back pain recommend soft tissue work. We cannot get support from the NHS despite the fact that many of those with soft injuries end up on our couches when all else has failed.”
